I was drawn to the NEACD by my love and dedication to continuing education and by my vision of dentistry as enhancing the oral health of those who entrust themselves to our care. This has long been a deeply engrained family tradition - my father, Howard Mark was Director of the Mount Sinai residency program for many years, and a beloved teacher at UCONN until his retirement in 2008 and my uncle Alvin Berger was Chairman of the CE committee for over twenty years. I found in this organization people of equal commitment and enthusiasm with whom it is my privilege to work.
It is my goal to continue with our excellent programming and to draw as many of my colleagues as possible into this sphere of excellence, camaraderie and excitement. I want to emphasize the wide applications of cosmetic procedures. I truly believe that the smallest restoration, the improvement of periodontal health the understanding of occlusion and function are all essentially cosmetic. Our goal is do the least amount of dentistry consistent with obtaining the result of a harmony of function, health and esthetics leading to virtually invisible dentistry. This is not about slapping 10 veneers on every patient. This is about understanding our patients, our skills, our knowledge and learning to apply this knowledge for the benefit of our patients.
I believe that getting together with others who are similarly inspired and driven is the best way to grow and enjoy the process. Our profession is a rewarding but demanding mistress. Mentoring each other is the focus of groups like the NEACD. We are small enough to be like family, comfortable and safe, allowing us to stretch and question, knowing that we have colleagues on whose knowledge we can draw.
In addition, we are fortunate to have the support of the AACD behind us. We are looking forward to having the 2011 Annual Meeting of the AACD in Boston. Our own Marty Zase will be leading a "Failures I Have Known" course.
Here at the NEACD, our phenomenal lineup includes Hugh Flax, wrapping up 2011 and then Betsy Bakeman and John Weston for our 2012 program. What a great opportunity for our New England colleagues!
I am fortunate to have the support of a dynamic and dedicated Board of Directors, with tons of terrific ideas. I look forward to sharing two great years and great smiles with all of you.

On October 27, 2012 we will be hosting Dr. Betsy Bakeman to talk about Evaluating and Managing Soft Tissue Architecture for Optimal Esthetics. She will give us a framework by which to assess and properly treatment plan the soft tissues to yield the most esthetic result possible.
Course Outline
An esthetic treatment plan often calls for alteration of gingival contours for optimal results. In the majority of cases the restorative dentist, with proper diagnosis, treatment planning, and surgical training, can successfully provide the required gingival alteration. Providing this care allows the restorative dentist to refine his or her diagnostic skills, maintain greater control over treatment and increase patient satisfaction. By learning to manage the periodontal/restorative interface you can predictably and profitably take your esthetic dentistry from acceptable to exceptional.
Course Objectives
- Learn the esthetic and morphologic factors that influence ideal gingival architecture.
- Understand the indications and contraindications for the various methods of altering gingival architecture.
- Learn the specifics, including instrumentation and techniques, for altering gingival architecture.
- Understand the importance of managing soft tissue architecture when replacing a missing tooth in the esthetic zone.

On March 14, 2009 we hosted Dr. Marty Goldstein, who presented a morning lecture and an afternoon hands-on-workshop on digital photography with an emphasis on AACD accreditation level photos.
On October 23 - 24, 2009 we enjoyed a two day event. On Friday afternoon we experimented with a three lecture series featuring Dr. Marty Zase on Zero Sensitivity Whitening, Dr. Fred Arnold on Veneers, and Surf Ct on Office Multimedia-Computer Integration. We partnered with the AACD to bring you the first ever East Coast affiliate hosted AACD Advanced Accreditation Workshop on all day Saturday. This is an exciting opportunity to learn from some cosmetic masters and sharpen our eyes to move us towards being able to provide accreditation level cosmetics. You will have the opportunity to bring your own cases to be evaluated, or you can just learn from those presented. This is a powerful workshop that should not be missed.
On March 13, 2010 we listened to Dr. Bill Blatchford as he presented his course "How to have a Thriving, Profitable Practice in any Economy", giving us valuable insights in time and practice management. He delineated ways to have the practice of your dreams, while practicing the type of dentistry you always wanted to, and also decreasing your stress and increasing your team's moral.
October 16, 2010 Dr. Brian LeSage, who is currently the fellowship chair if the AACD, will be presenting his course "Dental MakeOvers Made Possible - Using Sound Esthetic, Smile Design and Restorative Principles". Fellowship in the AACD is the highest standard that the academy offers. His vast knowledge in cosmetic dentistry and passion for teaching is sure to bring everyone in attendance to new levels of cosmetic skill. This is a MUST NOT MISS event.
May 17-20 2011 was the AACD annual meeting in Boston. We were proud to be partner with the AACD again to help provide world-class educational speakers locally. If you have never been to an AACD annual session, you are missing a fantastic meeting! The AACD annual session is like nothing you have ever been to in dentistry. The excitement and camaraderie that is present is truly amazing. The caliber of speaker cannot be matched. This will change how you practice dentistry. Congrats to Marty Zase who hosted a phenomenal presentation on Wednesday afternoon titled "Failures I Have Known".
We were fortunate to recently have Dr. Hugh Flax share his incredible knowledge and skills with us at a recent New England Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry presentation. Hugh's delivery was warm, his knowledge base expansive, and his work displayed exuded excellence.
Whether step-by-stepping us through the use of a laser or demonstrating the intricacies of smile design cases, Hugh responded to our questions, provided us with answers, and willingly shared his techniques.
His all day presentation was a delight for all of our attendees.
On March 31, 2012 Dr. John Weston was our speaker for Ultimate Esthetics, Using Advanced Technology and Materials to Create Beautiful and Conservative Smile Design Cases!
Restorative materials and technology are now available to meet the most demanding esthetic and physical requirements while providing lasting beautiful restorations. This exciting "wide-screen" presentation showed how to successfully reproduce conservative, esthetic and functional smile design cases using a combination of direct composite and bonded porcelain materials. We also saw how the latest in digital video impression techniques can easily propel your practice into the future while delivering excellent fitting restorations. We learned how to conserve tooth structure and provide comprehensive treatment while keeping total treatment plan fees within reach of your patient's budget. Case selection and streamlined techniques were the focus of this exciting course! We observed multiple clinical examples of smile design cases using minimal prep direct composite and porcelain veneer and bridge techniques. This clinically focused course left us with valuable cosmetic pearls to take back and utilize in our practices everyday.
